Ostuni and Alberobello: the obligatory stages of your trip in Puglia & surroundings, without neglecting the food.
About Bari Vecchia and the rickshaw tour I have already spoken.
On my tour in Puglia I also made a stop in Ostuni and Alberobello: I had never been there and I was really curious to visit them!
A day had also been completely dedicated to Matera: I suggest you to reserve at least one day to this beautiful city, because it is… SIMPLY BEAUTIFUL, you will be enchanted and fascinated by it! (I’ll tell you about it in the next article)
But let’s go in order.
Ostuni
I had the privilege (also read amazingly luck) to visit the Città Bianca (the White City) on a Saturday morning in November: a village still asleep, very few people around, almost non-existent tourists.
It is certainly a different and unusual point of view compared to the overwhelming summer crowd.
I strolled through the empty streets, I enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere, the panorama with the veiled winter sky, the unexpected glimpses between the white houses, the squares and the steep stairways.
What to see in Ostuni
- before arriving in the historical center, stop in any street to get an overview of the town from below and photograph the ancient olive trees
- the Cathedral of the XV century with a beautiful rose window above the portal
- have a coffee in the bar in front of the Cathedral and enjoy the wonderful view
- the Museum of the pre-classical civilizations of Southern Murgia where the cast of a pregnant woman of over 25,000 years ago, Delia is exhibited

Alberobello
Another “mandatory” stop is the visit of Alberobello and its 1,400 trulli.
The trulli, with their characteristic shape, are made cement free constructions built piling up stones; the base is whitewashed and the roof is cone-shaped.
Each cone corresponds to a room. On the roof there are paintings of atropotaic symbols and the pinnacles can have various shapes.
Of course Alberobello has been a World Heritage Site since 1996.
What to see in Alberobello
Alberobello is made up of 2 districts: Monti and Aia Piccola.
- Monti is the district with shops and restaurants, certainly the most touristic and visited
- the Church dedicated to San Nicola is has the shape of a trullo and is definitely worth a visit
- Aia Piccola is the truest and less touristic district, where you can breathe “authenticity”
For an excellent tasting of typical products I suggest you Enoteca Tholos, Trullo del Gusto in the Monti district: cold cuts, cheeses, sweets, wine… you won’t be disappointed!

Cooking Class with “Dire Fare Gustare” (Talk Do Taste)
At the splendid Masseria San Pietro (in Conversano) I ventured into the creation of some typical Apulian dishes: the “focaccia” of Bari, the cavatelli, the cartellate and the sweetpanzerotti.
Practically: first you put your hands in dough, then you eat what we cooked.
The quality of the food is supervised and guaranteed by Mara and Marina, the founders of the Association Dire Fare Gustare.
You can see some steps to make the focaccia of Bari in this video.
